Released in 2011, “Lightning Medicine Cloud” was the debut release from rock duo Atomic Shadows. The band consisted of Colin Helton, guitars and vocals, and Matt Scherer, drums. Rounding out the duo on record was Steve Emmons on keys, and Hank Helton on bass guitar.
The album was a concept record, something of an outlier in the years that followed the garage rock explosion of the early 2000’s. Picking up with the opening track, we find our narrator in the throes of a breakup, processing their plight through a wild evening, ultimately waking to the question: was it all a dream?
Mixing elements of rock and roll, psychedelia, progressive music, and heavy blues, “Lightning Medicine Cloud” was a powerhouse debut; however, the band was not to be, and folded in 2012.
